- Instant results on a large drive. A real deep scan on a big card takes a long time because it reads every block.
- Repairing physically damaged hardware. A cracked card or a clicking drive is a workshop job, not a download.
The most reliable signal of a serious tool is simple: it shows you real previews of your own photos before it asks for a single payment.
The five checks that separate good tools from bad
Preview before payment
You should be able to run a full scan and see actual thumbnails of your own pictures for free.
Paying to find out whether anything was found is backwards.
Read only behaviour
A serious tool never writes to the drive it is recovering.
It refuses to save results onto the same device, and says so clearly.
Disk imaging
The ability to copy a failing card or drive into a single file, then work on that file,
is the feature that protects you from making things worse.
Honest file type support
Camera raw formats differ by manufacturer.
A tool that lists the formats it supports is more trustworthy than one that claims all of them.
Clear pricing
One price, one licence, no volume limit that reveals itself after the scan finishes.
Watch for tools that recover ten files free and then charge per additional file.
Free tools, paid tools, and what the money buys
Free recovery tools are real and some are excellent, particularly the long standing open projects used by technicians.
They tend to trade comfort for power.
The interfaces are plain, the output is a folder of numbered files, and nobody holds your hand.
Paid tools mostly sell convenience: friendlier previews, better sorting, format repair, and support when a scan behaves strangely.
For a straightforward deletion, a free tool usually finishes the job.
For a corrupted card full of irreplaceable pictures, the paid feature that matters most is imaging.
A decision path you can follow in two minutes
Most people waste an afternoon comparing feature lists when three questions would have chosen the tool for them.
Start with where the photos lived. A phone that never used a memory card needs a different approach from a camera card,

Formatted cards come back well but nameless. Heavily reused storage comes back in fragments.
